The gap between the sizes is bigger than the numbers suggest. A 9-inch cake is only half as wide again as a 6-inch, but its surface is about 2.25 times larger, which is why it feeds roughly twice as many people.

How big is a slice?
Serving counts assume a medium, after-dinner slice. Cut a 6-inch into 6 for generous slices or 8 for medium ones; a 9-inch gives 12 large or 14 medium. With other desserts on the table, you can cut smaller and stretch further.
- Use a long, clean knife dipped in hot water and wiped dry before each cut.
- Halve the cake, then quarter it, then cut each quarter into 2 (8 slices) or 3 (12 slices).
- Cut it cold from the fridge, then serve after about 15 minutes.

If your guests' tastes differ, two 6-inch cakes with different toppings serve 12 to 16 and put two flavours on the table, say Original Lotus and blueberry or pistachio. If you want one big cake to cut in front of everyone, go 9-inch.
